I think its true. Five days ago, I was tucked away in a lounge on the third floor somewhere on MIT campus, frantically studying for my impending final on Thursday. I had not done anything fun since Saturday afternoon, when I hunkered down and started studying for my four finals this semester. Over the next five days, I put in 50+ hours of solid, sweat-n-tears work for my finals, left my dorm at 8:30 AM and returned at 3 AM daily, and generally had close to zero human interaction (with the exception of a really nice custodian that would always come by around 2 AM that I got to know pretty well for the next few days seriously!). I also had not blogged much this semester, and this term also broke the record for me in terms of not traveling to NYC at all. Thats saying a lot considering I probably spent upwards of several weeks over the last three years (I feel old :( ) being in NYC during term on weekends, longer weekends, and Thanksgiving/spring breaks. So what did I spend my time doing? Heres a snapshot :) Consider this my obligatory picture post, long overdue :P Every once in awhile, you come to MIT and you hear of kids here who take 8 or 9 classes in one term (one such friend I have hilariously showed me his registration schedule once and lamented that he had to be in four classrooms at once Monday and Wednesdays from 1-3. he requested a conflict exam in a class where the professor didnt offer conflict exams for any reason he explained to the bemused professor that he *really* had to take a conflict exam because he already had three exams at the same time from three classes that didnt offer conflict exams!) but I discovered from trial of fire that six classes is A LOT I took two science classes and four history classes. Now before you all engineering majors berate me [obligatory Kanye entrance] Yo engineering majors Im really happy for you and imma let you finish, but if you go through MIT pooh-poohing the humanities classes, you will have missed out on some of the best professors of all time. OF ALL TIME. But no, seriously all of my history classes were taught by crazily-awesome professors (including this character), which will be detailed in the entry where I explain why I declared a history major at MIT, so youll have to wait to hear that story. Suffice it to say that declaring a history major on top of biology is a tremendously good idea and one of best decisions I made here (despite writing six papers totaling 88 pages this semester! i feel like i need to go adopt a tree now). I did have also have four finals this semester, which was perhaps a little bit more intense than I anticipated (I rarely even had four in high school). But its all good the race had been run, and the good fight had been fought. Isnt that domo-rolly thing one of the most awesome things youve seen? HAHA. Made by the same Kathy as above in the extremely hyped toy design class at MIT 2.00b. See when Snively took it! (2008). By the way, the rolly-thing is not the final toy. Its the first project in the course designed for students to get to know the tools that theyll be working with later on, but I think its always pretty awesome to see what people come up with :) We (MIT Model UN) invited Prof. Noam Chomsky to come and speak for us in March! If you dont know who he is, google him right now. start here. Taiwanese represent. US CENSUS 2010. Went to Senior Ball! SO FUN. Senior Ball is basically the last big social event for seniors before they graduate, and I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend! :) Its a great night filled with pretty good food, and A LOT of dancing afterwards. The level of partying that happened this year has definitely jumped up a notch, especially this semester, haha. CAN I SHOW YOU SOME FOOD PICTURES? PLEASEEEE. (Im going to show them to you anyway, cuz this is my blog. haha) Bostons North End is famous for its Italian food this is a sample from a restaurant that we waited in the March cold for 1.5 hours before getting in. It was well worth the wait. My ex-roommates (Steve and Zach 11) love Applebees, so this is the obligatory Applebees picture. We really should take a picture of Bartleys Burgers too, I think weve been there 4 times just this one semester. haha. Have you ever seen a tofu bibimbap? I chanced upon this really cool discovery courtesy of my vegan friend. I thought a tofu bibimbap would essentially be a contradiction in terms, but I think its still amazing. :) Theres also this really amazing Cuban restaurant in Jamaica Plains, a suburb of Boston. I havent been there since frosh year, and I got to go again this semester. It was as good as I remembered it to be. CURRENT STUDENTS dont graduate without trying it! :) Finally, this (froyo! NOT ice cream!) makes me complete. You dont know how happy this makes me all the time. Other than the old favorites of Berryline in Harvard Square and the new arrival of Red Mango by Symphony Hall in Boston, the real secret is that the best froyo comes from this Korean dessert store in Allston. Poke me if you want to go. :P (by the way, strawberry+kiwi is the best froyo combo of all time. OF ALL TIME. strawberry+kiwi+mango tastes as good as it looks, but 3 toppings is usually not too economical :( le sigh) Staying on MIT campus after finals week has been interesting its so quiet now that all the students have left. Will be heading to NYC via Chinatown bus on Wednesday, and then flying out of JFK (thats one major airport in the US that I have yet to go to that and Atlanta) on Thursday morning. Home till mid-June, with a trip to Shanghai thrown in. Then back to NYC so excited for summer in the City! :) Perhaps this was my way for making up for not spending any time there at all this semester, haha. Many entries yet to come about this semester!

1984 is a dystopian novel about the society of the future. Writing in 1948, he images Britain forty years in the future as a totalitarian dictatorship which combines elements of both Communism and Fascism in a powerful, omniscient police-state, based on terror. The story takes place in a totalitarian state called Oceania. Trying to control the thoughts of every citizen, the authorities rewrite history, changing events. The hero, Winston Smith, is an intellectual and rebels against this world and begins to dream of destroying the system. The description of London, capital of Oceania, in the first chapter of the book, is similar to wartime London. The environment recalls bomb-damaged London in 1948. The influence of WW2 is clearly evident; it is a nightmare that still haunts the population. Personal freedom is restricted because Oceania is in a permanent state of war and everyone is potentially a traitor. The only chance of survival is by showing obedience to the Party’s orthodoxy and complete devotion to the cult of BB. Everybody is constantly watched and the use of language modified to try and crush independent, individual, autonomous thought, so that the Party will at last be in control of the whole inner being of every man. Winston Smith (whose name is a symbol: Winston stands for Churchill, and Smith is a common surname, making him a stereotype of every man) works for the Ministry of Truth, but he doesn’t accept its fanatic attitude so he keeps a diary and falls in love with a girl called Julia. He makes friend with O’Brien, his superior in the Ministry of Truth, because he believes he is against the system as well. However, O’Brien turns out to be a party man who has Winston captured. Winston is the last man in BB’s dictatorship who tries to keep control of his inner self, but he is arrested because his love story to Julia is illegal and mentally and physically tortured until he loses his mental integrity. When he is rehabilitated and finally released he has been turned into a robot just like all the others. He has not only understood and accepted party doctrine, he has even come to love Big Brother. The structure of the novel recalls a tragedy because it is divided into th ree parts: in Part 1, Winston tries to be free, in Part 2, when he is about to fulfil his dream, his hopes are crushed, and in Part 3, he surrenders to the system and loses his humanity. Orwell gives a description of the political system of totalitarianism. In 1984 he described the methods used to control thought, to invade privacy and break down personal resistance. The totalitarian state tries to control the thoughts of citizens through language to limit the danger of independent thought. The use of language in 1984 is especially important because Orwell shows how every concept is turned into its exact opposite by the Party, bringing out a satiric effect and tragic irony. So the Ministry of Truth only tells lies, the Ministry of Peace is concerned with war and the language is contracted, taking out all creativity from its use, much as it happens today with mobile phones. The three irrational slogans of the Party are particularly meaningful because they reveal the ideals the party is based on, thought control and reversal of concepts. Orwell is concerned with the function of political language and shows that in Oceania words are so corrupted that they now mean their opposite. This implies that once language is controlled anything that the Party doesn’t approve is impossible. Thus reality is distorted and these distortions alter the human perception of the truth. This is similarly the danger hidden in mass media, whose power pervades modern society. Mass media control communication and impose a global view on all aspects of everyday life. That is why the control of mass media is important for the political party in power, because through mass media they can create consensus and alters thought so that everybody comes to think and desire what the Party wants them to think and desire. Therefore communication becomes manipulation and creates fear, as the dominant faces of BB in posters seem to say. BB IS WATCHING YOU means that everybody is controlled and can’t escape. People are alienated, deprived of desires, individuality and interpersonal relationship, so that they can’t but be obedient to the ruling party. So the media in the world created by Orwell in 1984 have a double function: to control human thought so that it comes to comply with the Party’s wish and keep watch on people everywhere and at any time. Subject to constant surveillance, citizens never try to rebel or escape. Terror is used to monitor and control people’s thoughts, feelings and actions. Orwell was politically committed and 1984 shows how precious and fragile human freedom is. In a period of social unrest, unemployment, economic depression and Nazi expansion, he turned to left-wing ideals and he went to fight for the Republican forces in the Spanish war. The experience in Spain made him aware of the political threats that could destroy left-wing ideals; he was horrified of the result of Realpolitik. He was particularly concerned with the tragic development of communist ideals through Stalin’s dictatorship in the USSR. Orwell was disappointed by Socialism and believed that the writer should be independent. As a matter of fact, though he was a socialist, he was very critical of a Socialism which was detached from the reality and the needs of the working class it is supposed to represent. One of the most outstanding features is the close connection between his political views and his writing. Orwell believed that the writer was a spokesman for the moral conscience of society and his duty was to denounce social evils. The influence of Dickens is shown in his choice of social themes and the use of realistic language because he used a simple, direct style. He believed in tolerance and justice and warned against the dangers of totalitarianism and thought control. He criticized totalitarianism, warning against the violation of personal freedom. 1984 shows a prophetic picture of the dangers caused by totalitarian dictatorships which annihilate individuality and justice. He wanted to warn readers against tyranny. The world described in 1984 is a nightmare. The party has absolute control, rebellion is punished with prison and torture. He showed his concern for the quality of life, human dignity and creativity; in his opinion, these qualities are threatened by the prevailing trend in modern society, where mass media control human actions, tastes and choices. He had a pessimistic view of the masses, because he believed they could be easily manipulated through language. BB’s dictatorship controlled thought, invaded personal privacy through microphones and tele-screens and broke down all attempts at resisting by brain-washing people. Moreover the strategies of the Party control not only the present and the future but also the past, by re-writing history. Winston’s job in the Ministry of Truth is to alter historical records to eliminate all memories of past events and adapt them to party policy when they are inconsistent with party doctrine. Orwell’s assumption is that a totalitarian state controls the thought of citizens through language to limit the dangers of independent thought. This is still true today because mass media are potentially dangerous, as they break down individuality and independent ideas by crushing imagination with conformity. 1984 is a picture of how the political system can suppress individuality and make man inhuman. Through science fiction he depicts a future world in such a realistic way as to make it very credible. The main character’s will and body are broken into total submission, leaving no hope in the future of freedom, non-conformism and use of individual reason. Orwell’s final conclusion of 1984’s nightmarish plot is that totalitarian powers destroy human nature and men are hopelessly overwhelmed by oppressive political forces. Spellbound The book I read was Spellbound by Christopher Pike. In this book, a teenage girl named Karen Holly, was killed at the top of a nearby mountain with her skull smashed in. The only witness to this horrible murder was her boyfriend Jason Whitfield who said that a grizzly bear killed her and scratched him across the face when he tried to stop the bear by hitting it with a stick. He later goes to the police with his story and tells them where to find her corpse. When the police get to the top of the mountain they do not find her body where Jason said that it would be, but instead discovered the corpse in a nearby stream. After a few weeks people start to think that Jason is hiding something about that terrible night, some people even think that Jason himself killed her. These conspiracies are fuel by many things such as the fact that there was flesh found underneath Karen's fingernails or that Jason now has a new girlfriend named Cindy Jones. The town decides to have a trial because of all of the conspiracies so that they can set the record straight on what happen that night. A couple days before the trial Jason, Cindy, Cindy's brother Alex, Alex's date Joni Harper, Cindy's best friend Pam Alta, and a foreign exchange student who is staying with Pam named Bala decide to go to the top of the mountain. Jason wants to do this because he says he wants to face his fear of the mountain that he got after the night Karen was killed. At the top mountain, Jason says he wants to show them a secret cave. After walking for about ten minutes they have to go over a log to cross the stream. While walking on the log Cindy falls off and into the stream. Alex and Jason run to try to save Cindy but suddenly Bala dives off a high cliff into the water, grabs Cindy and pulls her to safety. The next day at school, Alex and his best friend named Ray get in a fight because Alex finds out that Ray is going out on a date that night with Joni Harper. That is the last time Alex ever see's Ray alive because that night after Ray's date with Joni he is killed the same way that Karen was. This happened only a day before Jason's trial. As the plot thickens, Jason asked Cindy to appear at the trial in his defense. The morning of the trial a reporter from the local newspaper who thinks that Jason killed Karen comes to Cindy's house and talks her into thinking that Jason is hiding something. Two hours before the trial Cindy decides to go up the mountain to see what she can find. When she gets to the place where she fell, she finds that there was oil on the log which caused her to fall. She concludes that Jason did this so that he could save her to clear his name by making people think he is a hero for saving Cindy. The main characters in this book where Jason Whitfield, who is the only witness to the murder of Karen Holly, and Cindy Jones, the new girlfriend of Jason Whitfield. Other main characters are Bala, who is a foreign exchange student for Africa and Joni Harper, who turns out to be the one who kills Karen and Ray. Some secondary characters are Alex Jones, Pam Alta, and Karen Holly. The setting takes place in a small town in the Rocky Mountains at present day time. My favorite part of the book is when Cindy goes up into the mountains and discovers that Jason had put oil on the log to make her fall. This was my favorite part of the book because Cindy had just discovered that Jason may have killed Karen after all. The scariest part of the book was when Bala was in the hospital because Bala was very strong and smart and it would take a lot to hurt him, but something had. My opinion of the book was that it was great. I would recommend it to anyone who likes scary books or Christopher Pike books.

In future silk sarees can be produced without killing silkworm.
